Lebanon Runs Out Of Power, India And China To Follow

Lebanon has no centrally-generated electricity after the country’s two biggest power stations shut down due to a fuel shortage, plunging six million people into darkness.

Production stopped at Zahrani power station today hours after the Deir Ammar plant shuttered yesterday when diesel supplies were reportedly exhausted.

A government official confirmed the country’s power network ‘completely stopped working at noon today’ and warned production was unlikely to restart ‘until next Monday, or for several days’. MTN Nigeria Reacts To Network Outage

Telecommunication giant, MTN Nigeria has reacted to the service outage experienced by some subscribers on Saturday afternoon.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that MTN subscribers in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and some other parts of the country, at about 2:30pm experienced network outage as they could not connect to the network.

Some of the users who stormed the social media to lament the situation, said there was no notification prior to the outage.

Reacting, MTN which has over 77.35 million subscribers in the country, said it is working towards restoring normalcy in the affected areas.

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, on Saturday announced that its Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) will commence strike on Monday.

The union gave ‘deplorable state of the nation’s highways and other issues as the reason for the strike

Mr Tayo Aboyeji, South-West Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, who confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the union has lost many lives and property due to bad roads.

51 Dead, Scores Missing As Makeshift Vessel Sinks In DR Congo

No fewer than 100 people are believed to be either dead or missing following the sinking of a makeshift vessel on the Congo river, provincial authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo disclosed on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday. a spokesman for the governor of the northwestern province of Mongala, Nestor Magbado, stated that fifty-one bodies had been recovered by late Friday from the sinking during the night of Monday to Tuesday, and another 69 are believed to be still missing.

Sierra Leone Formally Abolishes Death Penalty

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has assented to a bill abolishing the death penalty in the country, becoming the latest African state to ban capital punishment. 

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that lawmakers in the West African country had voted to end capital punishment in July, replacing the punishment with life imprisonment or a minimum 30-year jail term.

‘As a nation, we have today exorcised horrors of a cruel past,’ Bio said in a statement, adding that capital punishment is ‘inhumane’.
