US Justice Dept To Block Texas Abortion Law

US President Joe Biden’s administration, in the latest move in the battle over reproductive rights, asked the Supreme Court on Monday to block a Texas law that bans most abortions in the state.

The Texas law is “clearly unconstitutional” and violates the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, which enshrined a woman’s legal right to an abortion, the Justice Department said.

Allowing the Texas law to remain in force would “perpetuate the ongoing irreparable injury to the thousands of Texas women who are being denied their constitutional rights,” the department said in its request to the nation’s …

Bloody Tuesday As Gunmen Kill Two Traditional Rulers In Imo

Unknown gunmen on Tuesday evening, opened fire on traditional rulers having a meeting in Imo State and killed two of them in the process.

Among the monarchs confirmed dead were the Obi 1 of Okwudor autonomous community, Eze E. Anayochukwu Durueburuo and Eze Sampson Osunwa of Ihebineowerre autonomous community.

The monarchs were holding a stakeholders’ meeting at the Njaba Local Council headquarters at Nnenasam when the incident happened.

It is understood that the surviving traditional rulers were left with varying degrees of injuries.

President Muhammadu Buhari hosts President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey to a two-day official visit to Nigeria starting today, Tuesday October 19th.

Accompanied by his wife Emine, President Erdogan is expected to come in from Angola, and depart to Togo at the end of his visit.

In the course of the visit, the leaders of the two countries are expected to consider about two dozen Bilateral Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding, MOUs.

They will authorise the signing of agreements on which there is a concurrence.

Haiti: Kidnappers Demand $17M For 16 Abductees

The Haitian 400 Mawozo gang that kidnapped 16 American missionaries and one Canadian has demanded $17 million for the release of all abductees.

Wall Street Journal which reported the ransom, quoting a Haitian official, said the bandits want $1million per each captive.

Among the captives is an eight month old baby.

The missionaries are part of the Ohio based Christian Aid Ministries.

Building Collapses In Ikorodu, Lagos: One Dead, Two Rescued

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) said one person has died from a collapsed two-storey building in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Monday around 10 pm; two persons were rescued alive and taken to Ikorodu General Hospital for medical attention.

NEMA South West Spokesman, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, told Newsmen on Tuesday that the two persons injured comprised of a male and a female.

Premier League clubs have voted to temporarily block teams from striking lucrative deals with businesses that have links to their club’s owners after the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of Newcastle.

Africa Daily News, New York can report 18 clubs voted in favour of the ban at an emergency meeting on Monday, with Newcastle voting against and Manchester City abstaining. It is understood that both questioned the legality of the move.

A temporary month-long ban on such deals will be put in place while the possibility of a permanent ban is debated.

Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have eliminated 20 Boko Haram/Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists at Chabbal area in Jere Local Government Area of Borno.

Maj.-Gen. Christopher Musa, the Theatre Commander confirmed the development on Tuesday.

Musa said that the terrorists mounted on several gun trucks coordinated attack through the agrarian community at about 7:00 pm and started shooting sporadically.

He said that the troops who were on alert about the movement of the terrorists repelled the attack killing 16 terrorists in the encounter.

Eight Nigerians aged between 33 to 52 were arrested for Internet scams, money laundering and international-wide scale financial fraud in Cape Town early today.

According to reports, those arrested were members of the Black Axe that preys on widows or divorcees and scammed them out of their millions.

Six leaders and the founder of the Black Axe organised crime group’s Cape Town chapter were amongst those arrested.

The group is believed to be behind hundreds of thousands of romance scams.
