No fewer than 15 soldiers and several civilians have been killed in two attacks in English-speaking western areas of Cameroon in the grip of a breakaway campaign, the defence ministry disclosed on Monday.

A statement from the defense ministry which was sighted by Africa Daily News, New York said; ‘Heavily armed ‘terrorists’ ambushed a convoy of elite rapid intervention forces at Bamessing in the Northwest Region on September 16′.

‘Using IED (improvised explosive devices) and an anti-tank rocket launcher, the insurgents immobilised the vehicles (in the convoy) before opening heavy fire on the latter,’ it added.

The federal government through the Ministry of Education has assured that candidates who missed the 2021 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) in the South East due to incessant sit-at-homes, will be given another opportunity to write the examination.

Mr Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, made this known while monitoring some examination centres in Abuja on Monday.

Although Echono frowned at the Sept. 13 disruption of examination centres in the South East, he, however, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination across the country which was written by over 1.57 million candidates.

Ondo State Security Agency Network also known as Operation Amotekun has revealed that no fewer than 35 kidnap cases were foiled by its men within the last few months.

Also, the regional security outfit dropped the hint that two illegal gold miners were arrested by operatives of the corps recently.

The state Commander of the Corps, Mr Adetunji Adeleye also disclosed that the corps has attended to 2,633 cases.

Briefing reporters in Akure, the Amotekun boss, said the Corps also arrested 1000 suspects, waded into 515 herders/farmers clashes, and arrested kidnappers.

A rebel group has claimed responsibility for series of mortar attacks launched overnight on the airport of Bujumbura, Burundi’s economic capital, a day before President Evariste Ndayishimiye was due to fly out for the UN General Assembly in New York.
