Disastrous Fire At Overcrowded Indonesian Prison Kills 41

A fire tore through an overcrowded Indonesian prison in the early hours of Wednesday when most inmates were asleep, leaving at least 41 people dead and injuring dozens of others.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the firefighters extinguished the blaze – which was mostly contained within one block that housed prisoners jailed on drug charges – at around 3 am (2000 GMT Tuesday) and evacuated the victims.

COVID-19: Nigeria Records 17 More Deaths, 597 New Cases

Nigeria recorded 17 more COVID-19 deaths, with 597 new cases on Tuesday, according to report released by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The 597 fresh cases represent a rise from the 379 cases reported the previous day.

Of these figures, Lagos topped the chat with 204 cases, up from the 138 cases it raked in on Monday.

Rivers recorded 89 cases, while Edo posted 65 cases and the FCT, 50 cases.

This takes Nigeria’s total confirmed COVID-19 cases to 196,487, with survivors 185,159 discharged.
