Rivers Govt Threatens To Sack Resident Doctors On Strike

The Government of Rivers State has ordered resident doctors at the State University Teaching Hospital to call off their ongoing strike within 24 hours from Tuesday, ‘or forfeit their salary and risk been sacked’.

A statement by the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, which was sighted by Africa Daily News, New York on Tuesday, stated that while the doctors have the right to go on strike, the Rivers State Government expects that such action ‘should be restricted to Resident Doctors that are directly under the payroll of the Federal Government, particularly as the Rivers State Government

Nigeria’s wait for a medal at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics has finally ended after Ese Brume won a bronze medal in the Olympic Long Jump event on Tuesday.

Gunmen suspected to be bandits on Monday invaded Ungwan Magaji, Kigam, Kisicho, and Kikoba villages in Kauru local government area of Kaduna State, killing no fewer than six persons in the areas.

More People Flee Homes As Turkey Wildfires Spreads

Wildfires in southern Turkey forced more people to flee their homes yesterday even as pressure on the government grew over its response to the deadly forest fires.

Turkey has suffered the worst fires in at least a decade, official data show, with nearly 95,000 hectares (235,000 acres) burned so far this year, compared with an average of 13,516 at this point in the year between 2008 and 2020.

Since the fires broke out last Wednesday, six people have died and more than 330 have received medical treatment.

Sudan Residents Say Bodies Seen In River Bordering Ethiopia

Residents of an east Sudanese town said Monday they had seen bodies washing up the river on the border with Ethiopia’s conflict-hit Tigray region in recent days.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that the unidentified bodies were floating on the Setit River known in Ethiopia as the Tekeze, which runs through its northern Tigray region — since Saturday, according to residents from Wad al-Hilou in Sudan’s Kassala state.

The commander of the rebel group in Ethiopia’s northern region of Tigray have declared that the group will continue fighting until their terms for a ceasefire are met.

The commander by name Gen Tsadkan Gebretensae stressed that the group aims to force the federal government to lift a blockade in the region and agree to a political solution to the crisis.

The government denies there is a blockade and has ruled out talks.
