El Salvador Adopts Bitcoin As Legal Tender

Crypto enthusiasts have gotten something to cheer about as El Salvador yesterday adopted the Bitcoin cryptocurrency as legal tender becoming the first country in the world to do so in the process.

The adoption came after President Nayib Bukele’s proposals to embrace cryptocurrency were approved by congress.

Africa Daily News, New York understands that on Tuesday night, lawmakers voted in favour of the plan with 62 out of 84 possible votes.

The country’s president made the proposal at a Bitcoin conference over the weekend.

South Africa Intensifies Power Cuts As Winter Demand Climbs

South African embattled power utility Eskom has announced severe nationwide power cuts, blaming rising electricity demand as winter sets in alongside breakdowns at two power plants as the reasons behind the moves.

In a statement yesterday, the power company pointed out that the expanded electricity rationing would last from 2 pm until 10 pm from Wednesday through to Sunday.

It also disclosed that the escalated power cuts were to ‘ration the remaining emergency generation reserves, which have been depleted.’

Morocco Legalises Medicinal Cannabis

The Moroccan parliament has passed a law legalising the production of cannabis for medicinal and industrial uses.

 The North African country has been considering the move for a while. On 11 March, the Moroccan government approved a bill authorising the ‘medical, cosmetic and industrial’ use of cannabis.

The interior ministry, headed by Abdelouafi Laftit, drafted the bill, and it paves the way for the legalisation of cannabis for medical use as which has now been completed.

The authorities are also going to put in the needed frame work to regulate its production.
