The man who slapped French President Emmanuel Macron across the face this week has been sentenced to a prison term of 18 months, 14 of which were suspended by a French court.

The man identified as Damien Tarel, a 28-year-old medieval history enthusiast, has been in custody since the assault on Tuesday which a prosecutor called ‘absolutely unacceptable’ and ‘an act of deliberate violence’.

Speaking at court in the town of Valence, prosecutor Alex Perrin called for an 18-month prison term after describing the slap as ‘absolutely unacceptable’ and ‘an act of deliberate violence’.

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has restated his directive to security agencies, to shoot anyone illegally seen with AK-47s and other assault weapons warning criminals that the order is still very much intact.

The President reiterated this at the handing over of security equipment by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to the Lagos State Police Command during his one-day official visit to the State on Thursday.

He warned that ‘A nation that turns its Police personnel and infrastructure into targets of violence and destruction is a nation on the path of self-destruction.’

The Nigerian Government has declared Monday, June 14, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day.

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, was quoted to have said this in a statement on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore.

The statement was titled, ‘FG declares Monday, June 14, 2021, public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.’
