Fire Crews Tackle Huge Blaze At South London Train Station

No fewer than two people were treated yesterday for smoke inhalation after a blaze at industrial units in south London that sent thick smoke billowing across the British capital and disrupted transport.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered tha at its height, some 100 firefighters were sent to tackle the fire in three commercial units under railway arches at Elephant and Castle, near the River Thames.

Six cars and a telephone box also caught fire, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

Hong Kong has banned all incoming flights from the United Kingdom from July 1 to curb the more infectious Delta strain of the coronavirus.

In a statement yesterday, government authorities said the UK would now be designated in the ‘extremely high-risk’ category of countries, it added, the most severe rating the city has for pandemic travel.

The latest measures over the Delta variant, first found in India, will restrict passengers who have stayed in the UK for more than two hours from boarding passenger flights to the city.

Germany will not be allowed to train on the pitch at Wembley before Tuesday’s Euro 2020 last 16 clash with England, because of concerns that, due to the amount of rain forecast in London, it may cause too much damage to the surface.

UEFA yesterday stressed that, while it is regrettable, the decision is unavoidable and has been applied to all teams playing in a last-16 match at Wembley.

For the second time in less than 12 hours, hundreds of passengers on the Abuja-Kaduna train service were again stranded in the bush after the train developed a fault minutes after leaving Rigasa station in Kaduna state.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Fidelis Okhiria who confirmed the incident in a statement explained that the train broke down as a result of engine failure but said a relief engine has taken over.
