Over 27 Miners Die In Peru Bus Accident

A bus conveying miners plunged into a ravine on a mountain road yesterday in southern Peru, killing at least 27.

According to the Ares Mining Company, the bus was headed from a pit near the Nasca Lines archeological site to the city of Arequipa when the crash occured.

The bus fell all the way to the bottom of a 400-meter (1,300-foot) ravine, leaving bodies scattered across the slopes of a hill in the desert region, press reports said.

One official said the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has asserted that no fewer than 146,000 Africans die annually from tobacco-related diseases and it could increase if urgent steps are not taken.

Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa said this on Thursday during a virtual press conference.

Moeti said tobacco was the leading cause of preventable deaths in the world and emphasised that ‘smoking damages nearly every organ in the body.’

The director stressed that ‘globally, exposure to secondhand smoke kills more than 1.2 million people yearly.’

Danish star midfielder Christian Eriksen is out of hospital after being discharged following a successful operation.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that Eriksen has been fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to regulate his heart’s rhythm, having suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in his Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland.

That left him requiring 13 minutes of CPR, and Eriksen had been in hospital since the incident six days ago.

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has left the country to participate in the 59th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

According to a press statement by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, the president departed Abuja on yesterday for the summit.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has approved the disengagement of 99 political appointees in a move to reduce governance costs.

The governor made revealed this at a media chat with journalists in Kaduna on Thursday night, explaining that the disengaged political appointees constitute 30% of political officeholders.

He said his government would reduce the size of civil servants in the state but maintained that government appointees will go first.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has struck out a suit challenging the legality of the three-month tenure extension of Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu by President Muhammadu Buhari.
