Dozens Dead As heatwave Shatters Records In Canada

Dozens of people have died in Canada amid an unprecedented heatwave that has smashed temperature records in the last few days.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that the Police in the Vancouver area have responded to more than 130 sudden deaths since last Friday most of whom were elderly or had underlying health conditions.

They also suggested that heat was a contributing factor in many of the reported cases.

Yesterday, Canada recorded its highest ever temperature for a third straight day – 49.5C (121F) in Lytton, British Columbia Africa Daily News, New York can confirm.

2 Killed As Protesters Clash With Security In Ghana

At least two protesters died as a result of gunshot wounds after clashing with security forces in Ejura town in Ghana’s Ashanti region, Africa Daily News, New York reports.

Dozens of youth had gathered near where a popular social media activist was to be buried.

According to reports, Ibrahim Muhammed, 45, was killed on Sunday, his supporters suspect he was targeted because of his criticism of the government.

Tuesday’s clash started when some residents threw stones at the security forces, Citi Newsroom reports.

COVID-19: WHO Identifies Risky Delta Variant In 85 Countries

The Director-General, World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, has expressed concern over the COVID-19’s delta variant, which he described as ‘the most transmissible’ mutation to date.

Speaking to reporters at a regular briefing yesterday, Ghebreyesus explained that the delta variant of the virus had been identified in at least 85 countries and is ‘spreading rapidly among unvaccinated populations’.

The British High Commission has reacted to the arrest of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

In a message made available to Africa Daily News, New York,  a spokesperson of the British High Commission,  Dean Hurlock stated that while they can confirm Kanu’s arrest, he was not picked up in the UK where he is based before now.

The IPOB leader, who is also a UK citizen, had been in the UK since 2017 when he fled Nigeria.

Hong Kong has banned all incoming flights from the United Kingdom from July 1 to curb the more infectious Delta strain of the coronavirus.

In a statement yesterday, government authorities said the UK would now be designated in the ‘extremely high-risk’ category of countries, it added, the most severe rating the city has for pandemic travel.
