Mali Coup Leader, Col Goïta Named Transitional President

Mali’s constitutional court has installed military coup leader, Colonel Assimi Goïta, as transitional president.

The court explained that its decision followed the ‘vacancy in the presidency’.

Goïta had declared himself interim president on Wednesday, two days after seizing power, the second time.

Goita led the mutiny that ousted ex-President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in August 2020.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed support for the introduction of Sharia in the South-West.

Biden To Push $6 Trillion US Budget For Next Fiscal Year

US President, Joe Biden yesterday proposed a $6 trillion budget to ‘reimagine’ the US economy and stave off Chinese competition and set the US economy on the path of full recovery.

Many experts however have pointed out that the proposal would be driving the United States into record debt although it is subject to congressional approval.

Announcing the proposed spending, Biden said the post-pandemic United States ‘cannot afford to simply return to the way things were before.

EU Moves Against TikTok Over Child-Targeted Ads

The EU has stated that TikTok must address concerns of aggressive advertising methods targeting children in a case launched by consumer authorities in several member states.

The European Commission said the popular video-sharing app had one month to respond, saying ‘hidden marketing, aggressive advertising techniques targeted at children, and certain contractual terms in TikTok’s policies’ were of ‘specific concern’.

TikTok has faced many such cases globally, and the EU claim comes a month after Britain accused the video-sharing app of illegally collecting personal data from millions of children in Europe.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria yesterday dismissed the appeal on the certificate forgery case brought by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its chieftain, Mr. Williams Edobor, against Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that thre apex court said the appellant (Edo APC) failed to prove that the certificate issued by the University of Ibadan, with which Obaseki contested the 2020 Edo governorship election was forged.
