Nigeria used to be one of the best economic heavyweights of West Africa but now, she faces huge, and devastating economic challenges. Approximately two-thirds of her people live in poverty, her economy suffers from low productivity, an uneven climate for trade, and investment. Until recently, oil-rich Nigeria has not been a good place to make products or grow crops because she didn’t have to be—the country simply imported what she needed. But times are changing for Africa’s most populous Nation-State.

Around June 2018, Nigeria overtook India, a country with seven times her population, at the bottom of the table.

Fears As Indian Covid Variant Spreads To More African Nations

No fewer than 3 more African countries – Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria – have now detected the Indian variant of coronavirus, Dr. Ngoy Nsenga, from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed.

The confirmation brings to seven the number of African nations that have confirmed the B.1.617 mutation, which initial studies show spreads more easily than other variants

Dr. Nsenga, who co-ordinates the WHO’s Covid-19 response in Africa, said he had no further details on the number of cases or travel history of the people who tested positive in Algeria, Dr. Congo and Nigeria.

Sierra Leone Government Moves To Abolish Death Penalty

Sierra Leone’s government is making frantic efforts to abolish the death penalty in the West African state, deputy justice minister Umaru Napoleon Koroma revealed yesterday.

No execution has taken place in the country since 1998, and death penalties are often commuted.

Sierra Leone, which is still recovering after decades of civil war, has frequently come under fire from rights groups for keeping capital punishment on the books.

‘Once the legislation goes to parliament and gets approved, that ends the story of the death penalty,’ Koroma told reporters.

The Arewa Consultative Forum has reacted to the resolutions reached by Southern governors’ at their meeting held on Tuesday saying that restructuring Nigeria would divide the country.
