Senate Approves Buhari’s $2.6bn Foreign Loan Request

The Senate, on Wednesday, approved the sum of $2.6 billion out of the $5.5 billion external borrowing request sent to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari in May last year.

The approval came after the Upper Chamber considered a report by the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts during plenary.

The approved sum, according to the Chairman of the Local and Foreign Debt Committee, Clifford Ordia, would see €995 million euros going to finance priority projects of the federal government, while $1.5 billion (USD) would be disbursed to the thirty-six state governments to finance critical projects.

Navy Searching For Missing Submarine In Indonesia

Indonesia’s navy said it was searching for a submarine with 53 crew aboard after losing contact with the vessel during naval exercises off the coast of Bali on Wednesday.

The German-built KRI Nanggala 402 was scheduled to do live torpedo exercises when it asked for permission to dive early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

‘After permission was given according to the procedure, the submarine lost contact and could not be reached,’ the defence ministry said.

A helicopter looking for the missing vessel spotted an oil spill in waters where the submarine was thought to have submerged, it added.

Senate Approves Fresh $1.5B, €995M loans For Buhari

The red chamber of Nigeria’s national assembly yesterday approved fresh external loans of $1.5bn and €995million for the Federal Government.

The Senate gave its approval for the foreign loans after considering the report of its committee on local and foreign debts during Wednesday’s plenary session.

The Chairman of the committee Clifford Ordia also explained to the lawmakers that the panel had considered the loan request and was recommending its approval.

The €995million loan is meant for agricultural mechanization across the 774 LGAs while the $1.5billion loan will be used to fund critical infrastructure in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic
