Stability Of Chad Must Be Prioritised – African Union, EU

The African Union and European Union have reacted to the death of Chad President Idriss Deby.

Deby was killed shortly on the frontline after emerging winner of a recent Presidential election and re-elected for a sixth term in office.

The African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, in a condolence message on Tuesday described Deby as a distinguished military leader.

Faki described Deby as a ‘great statesman and recognised military leader.’

IGP, Usman Baba Withdraws Senior Police Officers From EFCC

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba has withdrawn senior police officers from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

A statement by Idowu Owohunwa, principal staff officer to the IGP, said senior officers from the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) are to be released from the EFCC.

It also stated that the officers are to report to the force headquarters on Wednesday by 10am.

According to the statement, ‘the decision is informed” by the current operational requirements of the force.’

The family of George Floyd has rejoiced over the conviction of Derek Chauvin.

A Former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted by a jury and found guilty on all charges in the death of George Floyd.

Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.

Recall that George Floyd died in May 2020 after Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd’s neck while he shouted, ‘I can’t breathe.’

20 Crew Missing After Philippine Ship Runs Aground In Typhoon

A search for 20 crew members who went missing in the Philippines after their cargo ship ran aground while seeking shelter from rough waters churned up by a typhoon has commenced.

According to the coast guard, the crew abandoned the vessel laden with nickel ore on Monday after it hit the shore at Malimono town on the southern island of Mindanao.

At least Eighteen of them were still in a life raft when contact was lost on Tuesday, coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said. The whereabouts of the other two are not known.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over ‘the sudden and tragic’ death of his Chadian counterpart President Idriss Deby.

According to official sources, the 68-year-old leader died on the front line, fighting against rebel soldiers.

Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, President Buhari said: ‘I’m deeply shocked and devastated by the sudden death of Idriss Deby on the battle front to defend the sovereignty of his country.’
