Surprise As Buhari Appoints Usman Baba As Acting IGP

It came as a pleasant surprise on Tuesday when the Federal Government announced that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of DIG Usman Alkali Baba as the acting Inspector General of Police.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, announced this on Tuesday while briefing State House reporters.

He also revealed that Baba’s appointment is with immediate effect.

Two Chinese Expatriates Abducted By Uknown Gunmen In Osun

Two Chinese expatriates, Zhao Juan and Wen were yesterday abducted by unknown gunmen at a mining site in Osun state the police have confirmed.

The foreigners were kidnapped at a mining site located in Okepa/Itikan village in Ifewara, Atakumosa-West local government area of the state.

According to reports, the gunmen invaded the site in numbers and engaged local guards in a gun duel for almost an hour before they subdued the guards.

Confirming the abduction, the state police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola, said the gunmen also shot two private guards at the gold mining site before abducting the expatriates.

The Kogi State Government has taken delivery of about 16, 900 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The Executive Director, Kogi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KSPHCDA), Dr Abubakar Yakubu received the vaccine on Monday night.

Yakubu, while addressing reporters shortly after receiving the vaccines, said the most awaited COVID-19 vaccines arrived in the State from Abuja at about 7:40pm.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has signed legislation that formally granted him the right to stay in power until 2036.

According to Reuters, the law which was signed on Monday by the 68-year-old leader, allows him to extend his 20-year rule until he turns 83.

Putin’s second consecutive and fourth overall presidential term ends in 2024, the year when Russia’s previous Constitution would have required him to step down.

If elected again, he would remain president until 2036, making him the longest-serving leader of Russia since Josef Stalin and Peter the Great.

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has alerted the public as the US placed all alcohol-based hand sanitisers, manufactured in Mexico on watch list.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made this known in a statement released to newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

Covid-19: Infections Go From Bad To Worse In India

In just 24 hours India has recorded over 100,000 Covid-19 cases, its highest single-day rise since the start of the pandemic.

On Sunday India breached the critical mark of 100,000 Covid-19 infections in a single day for the first time since the pandemic began last year. The sub-continent thus became the second country after the United States to achieve the grim milestone.

India now has 12.5 million cases, the third-highest total globally, and about 164,000 reported deaths. Out of India’s total cases, the western state of Maharashtra alone accounted for 57,700 cases, its highest ever single-day spike.
