Minimum Wage: NLC Declares Immediate Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has declared an ‘immediate industrial action’ in some states that have failed to pay the ₦30,000 new national minimum wage.

NLC lamented that about half the states in the country were yet to conclude negotiations on payment of the minimum wage.

The Congress’s directive was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the National Executive Council, NEC, and was jointly signed by the NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba and General Secretary, Mr Emma Ugboaja.

Japan Discovers More Than 90 Cases Of New COVID-19 Variant

Japanese health authorities on Friday disclosed that it has found more than 90 cases of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus in the country.

Speaking to reporters, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobo Katohe said the mutant variant, known as E484K, has been found in 91 cases in the Kanto area of eastern Japan and in 2 cases at airports.

World Bank Names Former Senegalese Minister As Head Of IFC

The World Bank on Thursday announced that it has selected former finance minister of Senegal, Makhtar Diop to lead the IFC which is the agency saddled with the responsibility of overseeing private sector finance at a critical time for the global recovery.

Diop would now become the first African to lead the International Finance Corporation (IFC) which leverages financing to support private firms in developing nations.

The announcement comes just days after the World Trade Organization selected Nigeria’s former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its new director-general, the first African and first woman to serve in that role.

Nigeria’s economy has slightly exited one of its worst recessions after spending three quarters in the negative zone according to official figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
