Open Grazing No Longer Sustainable – Northern Govs

The Northern Governors’ Forum says the current system of open grazing, operated by herders in the country, is no longer sustainable.

The forum made this known in a statement issued by its chairman and governor of Plateau, Simon Lalong.

According to the communique, the northern governors will aggressively sensitise herdsmen on the need to adopt new methods of herding by ranching or other acceptable modern methods.

It said that the northern governors would engage elders and youths in discussions, to seek solutions to security challenges in the north.

Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom has demanded an investigation into the reported gang rape of a teenage girl by four young men in Obi Local Government Area of the State.

The Governor, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase condemned the incident.

Ortom described the act as barbaric, dehumanising and unfortunate.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday urged the Senate to confirm the new Service Chiefs as ambassadors.

The recurring incidents of herders, farmers’ clashes in some parts of the country will receive the attention of the Senate as it reconvenes from its Christmas break this week.

This was disclosed by the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, who spoke to newsmen on Monday. He also opined that the issues should be resolved through dialogue locally without the involvement of the federal government.

The head of the roman catholic church, Pope Francis on Monday hailed the power of inter-religious dialogue as the Vatican confirmed he would meet Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani during his forthcoming trip to Iraq.
