Merkel Defends ‘slower’ EU Vaccine Rollout

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday defended the European Union’s troubled vaccine drive, saying there were ‘good reasons’ the rollout had got off to a slower start than in some other countries.

Speaking after a vaccine ‘summit’ that brought together key players, Merkel renewed a promise to offer every German citizen a vaccine by the end of September.

Merkel had convened the online talks in response to growing anger in the 27-member bloc over the sluggish rollout of Covid-19 jabs, which has been beset with delivery delays and piled political pressure on EU leaders.

COVID-19: Nigeria To Receive 16M Vaccine Doses February

The Federal Government has said that the country will receive 16 million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines before the end of February.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, said on Monday that this will replace the initial 100,000 doses of the Pfizer and BioNTech approved vaccines earlier expected in the country.

COVID-19: 75 Nigerian Health Workers Test Positive In One Week

The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Chikwe Ihekweazu, has expressed worry that at least 75 health workers have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last one week in various parts of the country.

The NCDC boss disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF).

According to him, the number of health workers getting infected is becoming worrisome, noting that efforts are ongoing to ensure health workers are actively protected against the virus.

News sources first reported sighting the Nigerian leader without his mask in Daura, Katsina State, on Saturday.
