American Citizen Kidnapped In Niger

An American citizen has been kidnapped by gunmen in southern Niger, a senior official told AFP on Tuesday.

The American, described as the son of a missionary living in Niger, was abducted by six men armed with Kalashnikovs on the outskirts of Massalata, a village about 10 kilometres (six miles) from the border with Nigeria, said the prefect of the Birni Nkonni department, Ibrahim Abba Lele.

Spain’s unemployment rate jumped to 16.26 percent in the third quarter as the country’s tourism-dependent economy was ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic, official data showed Tuesday.

The reading for the July-September period compares with a jobless rate of 15.3 percent for April to June in the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy, national statistics office INE said in a statement.

Dubai is introducing a facial recognition system on public transport to beef up security, officials said Sunday, as the emirate prepares to host the global Expo exhibition.

“This technology has proven its effectiveness to identify suspicious and wanted people,” said Obaid al-Hathboor, director of Dubai’s Transport Security Department.

The emirate already operates a biometric system using facial recognition at its international airport.
