18 Dead In Thailand Bus-Train Collision

At least 18 people were killed and more than 40 injured in Thailand Sunday when a freight train crashed into a bus taking passengers to a religious ceremony, officials said.

The morning collision, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of the capital, Bangkok, toppled the bus and sheared off part of its roof.

More than 40 passengers were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment, said provincial hospital director Sombat Chutimanukul.

“Four are in critical condition and eight remain under observation” out of the 23 admitted to her hospital, she told reporters.

Sudan’s landmark peace deal with rebels that seeks to end decades of war will cost $7.5 billion, the finance minister has said — a vast sum for the poverty-stricken nation.

Under the October 3 deal between Khartoum and a coalition of rebel groups, the government pledged to fund major development projects in areas ruined by years of war, including in the western Darfur region.

“The implementation of the peace plan requires at least $7.5 billion over 10 years,” Heba Mohamed Ali Ahmed said, according to Sudanese media reports on Friday.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has described his re-election as the reward for hard work, dedication, focus, honesty and patriotism.

Akeredolu was re-elected with 29,2830 votes to defeat the candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede, who had 19,5791 votes at the just-concluded Ondo governorship election.

Akeredolu made the assertion in Akure on Sunday, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner of the election which he won by a margin of 97,039 votes.

The University of Mkar in Benue State has confirmed the death of its two lecturers, Mr Joshua Leva and Mr Moses Tarnongo, in a motor accident which occurred on Saturday.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has said that organisers of Saturday’s End SARS protest, who were arrested by the police, have been released.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the Ogun Police Command had earlier confirmed that 23 persons were arrested on Saturday when the protest which was meant to be peaceful turned violent.

The spokesman of the Ogun Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told Africa Daily News, New York that some of the youths were apprehended as three guns, rounds of ammunition and assorted charms were discovered in one of their cars.
