UN Refugee Chief Tests Positive For COVID-19

The UN refugee chief said Wednesday that he had tested positive for Covid-19 after leading the first day of the agency’s main annual meeting in person.

Filippo Grandi, who kicked off UNHCR’s week-long Executive Committee meeting in Geneva on Monday, told participants via video-link that he would need to continue following the event from home.

“I am engaging with UNHCR’s Executive Committee from home as I have to isolate after testing positive to #COVID19,” he said in a tweet.

Egypt’s prosecutor-general has ordered the release of a journalist days after she was arrested in the country’s south, amid outcry from international press freedom advocates.

“The prosecutor-general has ordered the release of the defendant Basma Mostafa after she was questioned on the charges laid against her,” the prosecution said in a statement overnight Monday into Tuesday, adding that the investigation would continue.

Prosecutors had accused her of “using her personal social media account to publish and promote false news”, the statement said.

Policeman Charged In Death Of George Floyd Released On Bail

The police officer charged with killing George Floyd, the African American whose death sparked a mass protest movement, was released from a Minnesota jail on Wednesday on $1 million bail.

Derek Chauvin, who was video recorded pressing his knee to handcuffed Floyd’s neck during an arrest in May until Floyd went limp, is charged with second and third-degree murder and manslaughter.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office posted a notice of his release after more than four months in jail, after Chauvin was able to post the hefty bond.

Cuba on Wednesday denied that two doctors kidnapped by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in 2019 have been released, rejecting claims to that effect by Kenyan police.

“I deny the information circulating this morning about the alleged liberation of the two kidnapped Cuban doctors, Assel Herrera Correa and Landy Rodriguez Hernandez,” said Foreign Affairs Ministry Press Director Juan Antonio Fernandez.

“Considerable efforts are ongoing to ensure their freedom and their safe and healthy return to our country.”

Earlier on Wednesday, a senior Kenyan police officer told AFP: “It is true they have been freed. The doctors are now safe.”

The Governor of Osun state, Adegboyega Oyetola has approved the release of the sum of ₦708 million to offset pension arrears of retired civil servants in the state.

Mr Festus Olowogboyega, the state Head of Service, said in a statement that 508 million was approved for the payment of pension of retired civil servants, while ₦150 million was approved to pay retirees under the contributory pension scheme.
