Egypt’s Al-Azhar Slams Macron’s Islam Remarks As ‘Racist’

Scholars at Egypt’s prestigious Sunni Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, have denounced remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron on “Islamist separatism” as “racist” and spreading “hate speech”.

 

Macron on Friday unveiled plans to defend France’s secular values against radical Islam, describing Islam as a religion “in crisis” worldwide.

“He made false accusations against Islam, that have nothing to do with the true essence of this religion,” Al-Azhar’s Islamic Research Academy said in statement late Saturday.

Al-Azhar is one of the world’s leading Islamic seats of learning and Egypt’s highest institution of Sunni Islam.

Egypt Displays Coffins Buried 2,500 Years Ago

Archaeologists in Egypt said Saturday they had found 59 well-preserved and sealed wooden coffins over recent weeks that were buried more than 2,500 years ago.

Opening one of the ornately decorated sarcophagi before assembled media, the team revealed mummified remains wrapped in burial cloth that bore hieroglyphic inscriptions in bright colours.

The dramatic find was unearthed south of Cairo in the sprawling burial ground of Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

“We are very happy about this discovery,” said Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Yiaga Africa on Sunday said it has trained and would deploy a total of 646 observers for the 10 October gubernatorial election in Ondo state.

The Executive Director of the citizen-led movement, Samson Itodo, in a statement, disclosed that the training was held in 47 centres spread across all 18 LGAs in the state.

Beneficiaries of the training included 600 polling unit observers, 27 local government area observers and 18 collation center observers.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has banned policemen working for the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) from routine patrols.

Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries, on Saturday, called for the proscription of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

Suleman explained that SARS was a disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, hence should be proscribed.

In a tweet, the clergyman stressed that some SARS operatives are worse than criminals.

According to the fiery preacher, so many families have been rendered childless due to some trigger happy SARS operatives.
