EU Launches Legal Action Over UK Brexit Bill

The European Union launched legal proceedings on Thursday in response to the British government’s attempt to overturn parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

The infringement procedure, which could come before European courts, has not yet derailed post-Brexit trade talks, but reflects the pessimistic mood in Brussels as time runs short for a deal.

“This morning, the Commission has decided to send a letter of formal notice to the UK Government. This is the first step in an infringement procedure,” EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said.

Fierce winds drove heavy rain across large swathes of France on Friday, knocking out electricity for tens of thousands of homes along the western Atlantic coast and causing destructive flooding in the southeast, officials said.

An autumn storm baptised Alex buffeted Brittany overnight, with wind gusts reaching 186 km/h (115 mph) at Belle-Ile-en-Mer, an island off the coast near Nantes.

Chevron Nigeria Limited has said it will slash its workforce by 25 per cent as it is reviewing its manpower requirements in the light of the changing business environment.

CNL disclosed this on Friday in a statement entitled ‘Chevron Nigeria Limited reviews workforce in accordance with business exigencies’.

The oil major said it would continue to evaluate opportunities to improve capital efficiency and reduce operating costs.

The Appeal Court on Monday upheld the election of Douye Diri as Governor of Bayelsa State.

The court nullified an earlier judgment of the Bayelsa Election Petition Tribunal nullifying the election of Diri and ordering fresh poll within 90 days.

In today’s judgement, the five-man panel of the court held that the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, ANDP, failed woefully to show that it had a valid candidate that was unlawfully excluded by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Niger state government on Friday threatened to again close the Minna-Bida and Minna-Zungeru Roads to articulated vehicles, over the collapse of two bridges on the roads.

Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger stated this during the tour of some of the Federal and State Government-owned roads in the state.

Earlier, the state government had on Sept. 15, restricted the movement of vehicles on state-owned roads, which were temporarily reopened after a meeting with Federal Government officials.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo has revealed that he tested negative for coronavirus after President Donald Trump announced he had been infected and quarantined.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Pompeo said, ‘I’m feeling fantastic.’
