EU Unveils Proposed Curbs On Cryptocurrencies

The European Commission on Thursday unveiled plans to regulate cryptocurrencies, proposing rules that could limit the development of Facebook-backed Libra and similar projects.

Cryptocurrencies have exploded in popularity among investors since the emergence of Bitcoin, but the general public, banks and regulators remain wary.

Pressure from member states has pushed the EU executive to unveil its proposals to regulate the new sector, in the hopes of also nurturing its development.

“We should embrace the digital transformation proactively, while mitigating any potential risks,” said Valdis Dombrovskis, an executive vice president of the European Commission.

Bah Ndaw, a retired colonel who has been designated Mali’s interim president following last month’s coup, made his first public appearance on Thursday, meeting a regional mediator, AFP reporters saw.

Ndaw, 70, met former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, in Bamako on a mission for the 15-nation bloc ECOWAS, on the eve of his swearing-in.

Jack Ma, chairman of Alibaba Group has been unseated as the richest man in China by Zhong Shanshan, the manufacturer of bottled water.

Zhong, known as the “Lone Wolf” overtook Alibaba in China’s richest list after his fortune trebled this year.

According to Bloomberg, the personal fortune of Zhong, who owns China’s largest bottled water company Nongfu Spring, soared to $58.7 billion this year.

This makes him the 17th richest person in the world on Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index , and the second-wealthiest person in Asia after Reliance Industries’ Mukesh Ambani.

British prosecutors have launched an attempt to confiscate 30.8 million pounds ($39.3 million) from Bhadresh Gohil, the London lawyer who assisted former Delta state governor James Ibori in looting and laundering funds from the state.

Gohil was convicted in 2010 of 13 counts of money-laundering and other offences linked to his role in the case of Ibori, who was governor of Delta from 1999 to 2007.

Gohil was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Deaf Coalition Against Corruption on Thursday staged a peaceful protest to Lagos State Governor’s Office and House of Assembly over alleged corruption in the Lagos State Association of the Deaf (LSAD).

The protesters, led by the group’s Coordinator, Mr. Kehinde Akewusola, urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Speaker, Lagos Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, to investigate the alleged financial mismanagement by the executive of LSAD.

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Bauchi State Office, says it has seized cartons of fake hand sanitizers worth ₦350,000 in some supermarkets and drug retail outlets in the state.

The NAFDAC State Coordinator, Mr Mohammed Muazu, disclosed this to newsmen in Bauchi on Thursday saying the items were confiscated after a raid was carried out on shops, NAN reports.
