Belarus Opposition Leader Meets EU To Urge Sanctions

Belarus opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Monday urged the EU to show courage and step up its support for her movement, as the bloc’s internal squabbles about sanctions rolled on.

The former Soviet republic has been convulsed by unprecedented demonstrations against President Alexander Lukashenko since he was returned to power in a disputed August 9 election and launched a brutal crackdown.

Tikhanovskaya met EU foreign ministers in Brussels and urged them to sanction Lukashenko but, despite repeated statements condemning the veteran strongman and warning of measures, after 44 days the bloc has yet to act.

President Donald Trump on Monday threw into doubt a deal to restructure ownership of the popular video app TikTok, vowing to block any deal that allows its Chinese parent firm to retain any control.

The comments raised fresh concerns over a weekend deal that appeared to avert a US-ordered ban of TikTok, which the Trump administration has called a national security risk.

Gov Masari Pays ₦70.99bn Pension, Gratuities To Retirees

Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari has paid over ₦70.99 billion pension and gratuities to retirees.

This was confirmed by the State Head of Service, Alhaji Idris Tune, on Monday.

Tune told members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) Katsina Chapter, on Monday, that more than ₦29.62 billion of the amount was paid to retirees under the state government.

He added that those who retired from local government service and Local Government Education Authorities collected over N41.37 billion within the period spanning 2015 and 2020.

US Announces ‘UN’ Sanctions On Iran, Venezuela’s Maduro

The United States said Monday it was imposing sanctions on Iran’s defense ministry and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro under a UN authority which is widely contested.

“For nearly two years corrupt officials in Tehran have worked with the illegitimate regime in Venezuela to flout the UN arms embargo,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters.

“Our actions today are a warning that should be heard worldwide.”

Pompeo said that President Donald Trump has issued an executive order “that is a new and powerful tool to enforce the UN arms embargo.”

Governor Abubakar Atiku-Bagudu of Kebbi on Monday, laid the foundation of Nigeria’s first FIFA mini-stadium in Birnin Kebbi.

The facility will initially have 267 seats and can be expanded to accommodate 6,000 fans.

It is being constructed through the FIFA/NFF Goal Project.

Contract for the stadium construction, expected to be completed in six months, was awarded to ARON Nig. Ltd at the cost of $1.19 million.

The foundation for the project located on Kalgo Road in Birnin Kebbi. was laid by the governor, supported by executive members of Nigeri Football Federation (NFF).
