Land Dispute: Vietnam Court Sentences Brothers To Death

A Vietnam court sentenced two brothers to death Monday after a long-running land dispute spiralled into rare violence which left three police officers and a villager dead.

Residents of Dong Tam commune in a Hanoi suburb have for years clashed with authorities, accusing the military of illegally seizing their farmland for an airport.

In January officials attempted to erect a perimeter fence, but were met with villagers armed with “grenades, petrol bombs and knives”, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Pope Francis is being “constantly monitored” for signs of the coronavirus, a top Vatican official said Monday, after the 83-year old pontiff met with a cardinal who later tested positive.

Philippine cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, 63, had a private audience with Francis on August 29. He went on to test positive for Covid-19 on his return to Manila on September 10.

“We are being prudent,” Secretary of State Pietro Parolin told ANSA news agency.

The National Bank of Dubai, the largest banking group in the emirate, signed a memorandum of understanding Monday with Israel’s Bank Hapoalim, on the eve of the UAE-Israel normalisation accord signing.

“It is a great honour to be the first bank to sign such an agreement that will contribute to the establishment of the relationship between the two countries,” Bank Hapoalim’s CEO, Dov Kotler, said in a statement issued by NBD.

United States Pulls Out Ambassador To China

United States Ambassador to China, Terry Branstad, will leave Beijing soon.

Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, made the announcement on Monday.

He thanked Branstad for his more than three years of service to the American people as envoy to China.

‘Ambassador Branstad has contributed to rebalancing U.S.-China relations so that it is results-oriented, reciprocal, and fair,’ the senior official said.

Pompeo did not give a reason for Branstad’s exit.

CNN reported that Branstad would likely leave Beijing before the November 3 presidential election.

Two Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, officers died after bandits attacked the vehicle they were travelling at Udege junction, along Mararaban-Udege highway, Nasarawa State at about 8 am on Monday morning, Bisi Kazeem, the FRSC Corps Public Education Officer has said in a statement.

He added that the gunmen also kidnapped 10 officers, while four others were injured in the attack.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi visited the scene of Monday’s accident involving a train and two vehicles at the PWD area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

A train collided with two vehicles on Monday morning, with one person killed and seven others injured.

The Iranian Justice Department on Monday warned European embassies in Tehran against interfering in the case of Navid Afkari, a professional wrestler whose execution at the weekend prompted shock internationally.
