Liberia Declares Rape A National Emergency

Liberian President George Weah has declared rape a national emergency and has ordered new measures to tackle the problem after a recent spike of cases in the poor West African state.

 

The moves comes after thousands of Liberians protested rising incidents of rape in the capital Monrovia last month, in a bid to draw attention to the country’s alarming rate of sexual assault.

Late on Friday, Weah said he would install a special prosecutor for rape in Liberia, as well as set up a national sex offender registry, a statement from his office said.

Thousands of Mauritians marched Saturday for the second time in a month as public anger festers over the government’s handling of a devastating oil spill off the coast.

A sea of colourful demonstrators waving flags and chanting slogans descended on Mahebourg on the southeast coast, where a cargo ship ran aground in July and leaked more than 1,000 tonnes of fuel into the pristine sea.

Boboski, the most wanted suspected kidnapper, armed robber and murderer, whose real name is Honest Diigbara, has died from bullet wounds few hours after he was arrested and paraded at the Rivers State Police Command headquarters, Port Harcourt.

Boboski and his second in Command who were obviously groaning in pains while they were being paraded were drenched in blood sustained from bullet wounds.

The Lagos State House of Assembly is set to make provisions for compulsory lane markings, traffic laws signals on highways in the ongoing amendment of the Lagos Traffic Law and Regulations.

The Chairman, House Committee on Transportation, Mr Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaiye I), made this known during an oversight tour of the Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Friday.

Adewale said there would be appropriate sanctions for violators of traffic lane marking on the highway, adding that the signs and markings on the highway would further reduce the gridlock experienced by motorists.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on Friday adopted an “omnibus resolution’’ seeking a comprehensive and coordinated global response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

This came six days to the end of the 74th Session of the Assembly under the leadership of Nigeria represented by its Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Tijani Muhammad-Bande.

The U.S. and Israel voted against the decision, which sailed through by 162-2 votes with two abstentions (Hungary and Ukraine).
