Outrage After Germany Says Putin Critic Navalny Was Poisoned

Western leaders demanded explanations from Moscow on Wednesday after Germany said that Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent in an attempt to “silence” the Russian opposition leader.

The 44-year-old last month became the latest in a long line of Russian defectors and critics of President Vladimir Putin to be poisoned in suspicious circumstances, and is now in hospital in Berlin.

Medical tests from German military’s chemical weapons laboratory had given “unequivocal evidence” that Navalny had been afflicted by military-grade Novichok, a poison first developed by the Soviet Union towards the end of the Cold War.

A suspected gas explosion tore through a Bangladesh mosque killing at least 12 people while dozens suffered life-threatening burns, police said Saturday.

Worshippers were at Friday evening prayers when the blast sent a ball of flames through the mosque in the central district of Narayanganj, emergency services said.

Investigators suspected a spark from an air conditioner which came on after a power cut set off the gas.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said Friday it has begun withdrawing troops from various camps around the country where tens of thousands of civilians sought protection during its civil war.

The camps were set up in the capital Juba and other key cities after civil war erupted in 2013, prompting thousands to flee to UN bases in search of protection, particularly from brutal ethnic atrocities which characterised the conflict.

Japan has put about 22,000 of its soldiers on full alert as typhoon Haishen is expected to hit southwestern Japan in the next few days.

The Japanese Defense Minister, Taro Kono, disclosed this on Saturday as reported by the NHK broadcaster.

“In case something happens, 22,000 members of the self-defense forces are on full alert.

Prince Abdulkadir is a son of the late 10th Emir of Ilorin, Mallam Aliyu Abdulkadir.
