Pope Steps Up Call For Poor Country Debt Cancellation

Pope Francis renewed a call on Tuesday for the cancellation of debt owed by poor countries in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, saying it was time for restorative justice.

The pope is preparing for an audience with the public on Wednesday, his first since the pandemic hit Italy nearly six months ago.

“I repeat my call for the cancellation of the debt of the most vulnerable countries, in recognition of the severe impact of the medical, social and economic crises they face as a result of Covid-19,” the Roman Catholic Church’s highest official said.

China on Thursday decried a fresh ban by India on scores of Chinese apps — including the hit game PUBG — as a bitter border showdown seeped out into the tech sphere.

Internet giant Tencent is among the Chinese makers of 118 more apps be targeted in the latest Indian ban, which follows a rumbling territorial dispute along a disputed Himalayan frontier.

Legendary afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti has said that he declined an invitation by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to join the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Sudan and a key rebel group that had refused to join other opposition forces in a previous peace deal have signed their own agreement, officials on both sides said Friday.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and rebel chief Abdelaziz al-Hilu signed the peace deal in neighbouring Ethiopia, Sudan’s official news agency SUNA said, which posted pictures of the two men smiling and shaking hands.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has threatened to embark on another nationwide strike starting from the 7th of September, 2020.

France: 22 Schools Closed Down Over Rise In Coronavirus Cases

France’s Education Minister, Jean-Michel Blanquer, on Friday, confirmed that 22 schools have had to close down, due to a rise in coronavirus cases.

Blanquer noted that over half of these cases were in the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion.

Speaking with Europe 1 radio, he, however, said he was pleased with how the return to school had progressed since children went back on Tuesday.

10 schools have closed in mainland France and 12 on La Reunion, where there has been a recent surge in COVID-19 cases.
