Brazil Jobless Rate Hits Record 13.8%

Brazil’s unemployment rate hit a record 13.8 percent from May to July as Latin America’s biggest economy suffered the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, according to official figures released Wednesday.

The rate is the highest since the current tracking method was introduced in 2012, and two percentage points above same period last year.

The previous record — 13.7 percent — was registered in the first quarter of 2017.

The South American giant of 212 million people has been hit hard by the new coronavirus, with nearly 143,000 people killed, the second-highest death toll worldwide after the United States.

A man was shot dead Wednesday in a central Guinean city shaken by clashes since the prime minister visited it the day before to campaign for President Alpha Conde’s re-election.

Security forces on Wednesday shot and killed Habib Petel Diallo, 20, during a protest in the city of Dalaba against the premier’s visit, the man’s brother Lamine Diallo said.

A police officer who asked not to be named said the young man had died with a shot to the head.

Guinean authorities have not officially confirmed the death.

A suit filed by a group consisting of 15 Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, challenging the selection of 21 out of 31 persons chosen by President Muhammadu Buhari for appointment as judges in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory was on Wednesday dismissed by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
Justice Okon Abang, in his judgment, held that the plaintiff lacked locus standi to institute the case in view of the fact that they have not shown any special interest as to confer on them the locus to commence the suit against the respective parties.

UK Economy Shrinks 19.8% In Q2

Britain’s economy shrank by a record 19.8 percent in the second quarter, entering recession on the coronavirus lockdown, but the contraction was less severe than first thought, official data showed Wednesday.

‘UK gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have contracted by 19.8 percent in Quarter 2 (April to June) 2020, revised from the initial estimate of a 20.4-percent fall,” the Office for National Statistics said in a statement.’

As the Covid-19 pandemic raged, Britain officially entered recession in the second quarter, after gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by a downwardly-revised 2.5 percent in the first quarter.

The Inspector-General of Police has dragged the Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State, Abdullahi Binuyo, to a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, over alleged fraud involving $120,000.

Binuyo was charged for conspiracy, fraud, cheating and forgery in a suit numbered CR/975/2020 filed on September 9, 2020.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday swore in four newly appointed federal Permanent Secretaries at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the swearing-in was held shortly before the commencement of the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
