Eleven Shot Dead In Papua New Guinea Prison Break

Eleven prisoners have been shot dead following a mass jailbreak in Papua New Guinea and 36 others remain on the run, authorities said Tuesday.

The detainees escaped from Buimo prison in the Pacific nation’s second-biggest city Lae after rushing a gate when a sick prisoner was being moved for medical treatment.

The group overwhelmed a duty officer and attacked him with a knife before running from the prison compound.

UN Expert Urges States To Ban Evictions Amid Pandemic

A UN rights expert called Tuesday for governments to ban evictions until the COVID-19 pandemic ends, warning the number of people being expelled from their homes was rising globally.

Warning of an impending “tsunami” of evictions, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, the United Nations’ top expert on the right to housing, stressed that “losing your home during this pandemic could mean losing your life”.

The independent expert, who is appointed by the UN but does not speak on its behalf, stressed that “the right to housing is central to any response to the pandemic”.

Ogun Govt To Empower Disengaged N-Power Beneficiaries

The Ogun State government said it has opened another window of opportunity for disengaged Federal Government-owned N-power beneficiaries to become entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector.

This was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Kunle Somorin, on Monday.

Somorin stated that the disengaged Npower beneficiaries could venture into various agricultural intervention programmes of the Ogun State government.

It was gathered that the programmes are particularly designed to encourage start-up agric-businesses and promote up-scaling of smallholders’ farmers.

The country could be thrown into a fresh lockdown following a rise in Covid-19 cases in the community.

Kidnapped Wives, Daughter Of Slain Bauchi Lawmaker Released

After spending four days with their captors, kidnapped wives and daughter of the slain member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon Musa Mante Baraza, have been released.

The two women and the baby, Rashida Musa Mante (40), Rahina Musa Mante (35), and Fausar Musa Mante were kidnapped by some unknown gunmen who stormed their residence in Dass, the headquarters of Dass Local Government Area of the state and murdered their husband Thursday last week.

Their release was confirmed by the Chief of Staff to Governor Bala Mohammed, Dr. Ladan Salihu, in a series of tweets.

71-Year-Old President Jumps In, Rescues 2 Women From Drowning

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal has rescued two women from drowning at an Algarve beach after their kayak capsized, according to BBC.

The 71-year President was pictured swimming over to the kayakers who were struggling in the water.

De Sousa later told the press that the women had been swept by currents from a neighbouring beach into the bay.

The Portuguese number one citizen is currently on holiday in the Algarve which is aimed at promoting tourism in the area.

Portugal’s economy relies heavily on its tourism industry, which has been hugely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
