Putin Vows Military Support For Belarus’ Lukashenko

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed military support for embattled Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday, while urging a peaceful resolution to unrest and demonstrations that erupted after a disputed election.

EU ambassadors in the capital Minsk on Thursday denounced a crackdown on the opposition in the wake of the presidential poll, in which 65-year-old Lukashenko claimed a landslide reelection with some 80 percent of the vote.

Syrian Talks Resume Despite COVID-19 Cases – UN

UN-backed talks on a new constitution for Syria resumed in Geneva on Thursday after Swiss health authorities gave the green light despite four delegates testing positive for Covid-19.

The discussions, aimed at rewriting the war-torn country’s constitution, were put on hold almost as soon as they started on Monday when the test results came through.

UN envoy Geir Pedersen, who is moderating the tentative talks between representatives of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, the opposition and civil society, has voiced hope they could pave the way towards a broader political process.

Japan’s Naomi Osaka reversed her decision to withdraw from the WTA Western & Southern Open semi-finals on Thursday, saying she will now play the match that has been rearranged for Friday.

The two-time Grand Slam champion said in a statement on Wednesday that she had pulled out of her last-four clash with Belgium’s Elise Mertens in protest at the police shooting of black man Jacob Blake in Wisconsin.

However, after WTA and ATP chiefs announced a suspension of play at the tournament following anger over Blake’s shooting, Osaka said she has now changed her mind.

Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday, expressed his readiness to sign the death sentence judgment on an alleged blasphemy by a 22-year-old Aminu Yahaya Sharif by a Judge of Kano Upper Shari’ah Court.

The Judge, Aliyu Kani, said his judgment was based on Section 382 (b) of Kano Shari’ah Penal Code of 2000.

Omozuwa: Police Parade Suspected Killers Of UNIBEN Student

Three months after the brutal rape and murder of Vera Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the University of Benin, the Edo State Police Command on Wednesday paraded six suspects in connection with the crime.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the victim, Vera Omozuwa, a 100-level Microbiology student of UNIBEN, was beaten inside a hall in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ikpoba Hill, Benin City on May 13, where she went to study.

She died on May 31, 18 days after, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

She was 23 years old.

Tarrant New Zealand Mass Killer Sentenced To Life In Jail

Brenton Harrison Tarrant, the New Zealand mass killer, who attacked worshippers at two Christchurch mosques last year, has been sentenced to life imprisonment, the High Court announced on Thursday.

The sentence came after three days of the final hearing of the case.

The 29-year-old Australian gunman killed 51 people and injured 40 others on March 15, 2019.

He was convicted on 51 murder charges, 40 attempted murder charges and one terrorism charge.

A total of 91 victims and family members expressed grief, mental and physical injuries, and anger at the hearing in the High Court in Christchurch starting on Monday.…

Kevin Mayer, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chinese-owned video app, TikTok, has resigned from his position amid pressure from the US.

Mayer announced his decision in a letter to employees, saying his decision to leave comes after the “political environment has sharply changed.”

Hurricane Laura slammed into the southern US state of Louisiana Thursday and the monster category 4 storm prompted warnings of “unsurvivable” ocean surges and evacuation orders for hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said “extremely dangerous” Laura would bring winds of 150 miles per hour (240 kilometers per hour) and “destructive waves will cause catastrophic damage” to Louisiana and Texas.

South Korea’s parliament was shut down on Thursday and a group of lawmakers were in self-quarantine as the country recorded more than 400 new coronavirus infections.

The country endured one of the worst early outbreaks of Covid-19 outside mainland China before bringing it broadly under control with extensive tracing and testing, but is now battling several clusters mostly linked to Protestant churches.

Thursday’s 441 new cases were mostly in the greater Seoul area and are the latest in a series of near-six-month highs after several weeks with numbers generally in the 30s and 40s.
