Poland Enters First Recession Since Communist Era – Official Data

Poland is experiencing its first recession since the end of the communist era more than three decades ago, an estimate by Poland’s statistics office showed on Friday.

The economy shrank by 8.9 percent in the second quarter because of the effects of the coronavirus lockdown, after a contraction of 0.4 percent in the first quarter.

Recession is defined two consecutive quarters of contraction.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has slammed President Trump and Republicans over the denial of funds to the U.S. Postal Service, to allow seamless mailed voting.

Obama said Trump is trying to “kneecap” the post office to boost his re-election chances.

“It’s “unique” to see a president actively discouraging people from voting, Obama added.

“What we’ve never seen before is a president say, ‘I’m going to try to actively kneecap the postal service to encourage voting and I will be explicit about the reason I’m doing it,’” Mr. Obama said. “That’s sort of unheard of.”

The Lagos State government on Friday met with the major cab-hailing operators in the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu chaired the meeting which was held at the Lagos House in Marina.

Oil Prices Rise, Head For Weekly Gain

Oil prices advanced on Friday and were heading for the second week of gains amid growing confidence that demand for fuel is starting to pick up.

This is in spite of the coronavirus pandemic that has slammed economies worldwide.

Brent crude was up 14 cents, or 0.3 percent at $45.10 by 0043 GMT, heading for a gain of about 1.6 percent this week.

West Texas Intermediate had gained 12 cents or 0.3 percent to $42.36.

The U.S. benchmark is heading for a gain of nearly three percent this week.

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, has replaced Prime Minister Kim Jae Ryong after only one year in office, instead of appointing Kim Tok Hun to the post, state media reported on Friday.

Kim Hun, an economics expert in his late 50s, was reportedly also appointed a member of the steering committee of the politburo during a meeting late on Thursday.

The politburo is the highest executive organ within the ruling Communist party’s central committee.
