UN Appeals For $1.8bn To Assist 7.8m Nigerians

The UN System in Nigeria, alongside partner NGOs, are collectively appealing for 1.08 billion dollars to provide urgent aid to 7.8 million vulnerable people in Nigeria’s North East.

The UN says the funding needed was less than 12 dollars a month to save someone’s life.

Mr. Edward Kallon, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, made the appeal on Thursday, during a high-level virtual meeting on Nigeria’s humanitarian response with the theme “North-East Nigeria: Act now, Avert the Worst”.

US Visa Restriction: Nigeria Meets Two Demands

Nigeria is making progress to reverse the United States suspension of the issuance of “immigrant visas” to Nigerian passport holders, President Muhammadu Buhari said Thursday in Abuja.

Receiving the report of the committee on Citizen Data Management and Harmonization chaired by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, the President expressed delight that two out of the six areas of concern raised by the United States had been fully addressed.

The committee was set up in February this year to address issues that led to the U.S temporary visa restrictions on Nigerian passport holders.

A former Unity Bank top official on Thursday, said the $2.2million received from former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Bello Adoke, was for repayment of a ₦300 million loan he obtained.

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has raised the alarm over the tension and violence in Edo State.

It advised politicians to de-escalate the situation ahead of the September 19, 2020 governorship election.

No fewer than 15 persons were said to have been killed by armed bandits in Ukuru village in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger state.

It was gathered that the attack took place in the community around 12noon on Thursday.

Eyewitness account stated that victims met their untimely death at a tea joint while taking their breakfast, when the gunmen on motorcycles in their number unleashed the attack.

UN Condemns Attacks On Humanitarian Aid Workers In South Sudan

The United Nations humanitarian agency has strongly condemned brutal attacks on humanitarian aid workers in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria, an area that has been ravaged by attacks on civilian vehicles in the past.

Tanzania To Combat Cannabis Farming

The Tanzania Forest Service Agency (TFS) on Wednesday pledged to crack down on cannabis growers in the East African nation’s forests.

Dos Santos Silayo, TFS chief executive officer, said the agency will in collaboration with other law enforcers to ensure that people cultivating cannabis in the country’s forests were flushed out once and for all.
