Italy Plunges Into Recession As COVID-19 Bites

Italy posted a record economic contraction Monday as household spending and investment crashed during the country’s coronavirus lockdown, driving the eurozone’s third-largest economy deep into recession.

The country’s gross domestic product fell by 12.8 percent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter and by 17.7 percent versus the same period last year, national statistics agency Istat said.

“The full estimate of the quarterly economic figures confirm the exceptional extent of the drop in GDP in the second quarter, due to the economic effects of the health emergency and the containment measures adopted,” Istat said.

Start Date For Italy’s Serie A Announced

The 2020/2021 season of Italy’s top flight football league, Serie A will start on Sept. 19, the Italian football federation has said.

A news agency in Italy reported on Monday that all arrangements had been concluded for the the league’s resumption.

The last Serie A season ended on Aug. 2.

This was after it was interrupted for three months between March and June because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Kotoka International Airport in Ghana will open for international flights from September 1.

It was shut about five months ago after the outbreak of coronavirus.

On Sunday, President Akufo-Addo said public health officials can now conduct rapid tests on passengers.

In his 16th address to the nation on the pandemic, Akufo-Addo said: “I am glad to announce that KIA will reopen and resume operations from Tuesday, September 1, 2020.”

Beirut Explosions Caused Up To $4.6bn Damages – World Bank

The World Bank has estimated the value of physical damage caused by the Beirut explosions to be between $3.8 billion and $4.6 billion.

Nearly 200 were killed and thousands injured in the Lebanon city explosion.

Xinhua quoted an initial assessment led by the World Bank as saying that “The country will need international aid and private investment to recover.”

The assessment was in collaboration with the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU).

The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) has again emphasised that over speeding, reckless driving and overloading are among the causes of road accidents in the country.
