Jonathan Appointed ECOWAS Special Envoy For Mali

Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been appointed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as a special envoy to lead the sub-regional body’s mediation mission in Mali.

As a Special Envoy, Jonathan is to facilitate dialogue with all principal stakeholders in Mali, including President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, opposition leaders, civil society as well as religious organisations, towards resolving the worsening socio-political situation in the West African country.

Speaking ahead of his scheduled departure for Bamako on Wednesday, Jonathan promised to do his best to ensure that the mission achieves the desired result.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has said foreigners and anyone involved in the illegal mining of solid minerals in the country are engaged in criminal enterprise that undermines the sovereignty of the Nigerian State.

Governor Nyesom Wike-led Rivers State Government on Tuesday warned that no harm must come to former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Joy Nunieh, in the ongoing probe of the commission.

NDDC Blames COVID-19 For Delay In Paying Scholarship Beneficiaries

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has attributed the delay in meeting its obligations to the beneficiaries of its 2019 postgraduate foreign scholarship programme to the lockdown created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the inquest by the National Assembly.

The NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili in a statement in Port Harcourt said the commission was making concerted efforts to effect the required payments.

He said contrary to claims in some quarters, the NDDC had not abandoned the scholars, describing them as the commission’s ambassadors.

Publisher of Nigeria’s online newspaper Premium Times, Dapo Olorunyomi is among four journalists to be honoured in November with the 2020 International Press Freedom Awards.

The three other co-winners announced Monday by the U.S. based Committee to Protect Journalists(CPJ) are from Bangladesh, Iran and Russia.
