COVID-19: Over 13,000 Patients Die In Africa

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, has said there are currently over 609,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on the continent.

The UN health agency gave the update via its @WHOAFRO Twitter account on Tuesday.

“There are over 609,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent – with more than 305,000 recoveries and 13,000 deaths,” the tweet read.

Of that number, South Africa had 287,796 cases and 4,172 deaths, followed by Nigeria with 33,153 confirmed cases and 744 deaths.

Ghana had recorded 24,988 confirmed cases and 139 deaths.…

Twelve directors of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been suspended. 

On Tuesday, Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), sent a letter to Mohammed Umar, acting EFCC chairman, notifying him of the suspension of the directors.

Some of the directors affected by the action have been involved in investigating Malami — though the office of the AGF linked the exercise to the probe of Ibrahim Magu, the suspended acting chairman of the anti-graft agency.

Suspended acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu is out of detention, nine days after he was arrested by a Presidential panel probing many allegations against him.

He was released today, hours after the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu denied the police were holding him.

In a letter to Magu’s lawyers, the IGP office said Magu was being detained on the orders of the presidential panel headed by Justice Ayo Salami.

The Akwa Ibom Government has warned striking health workers in the state that they risk being sacked if they do not resume work immediately.

Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Udoh gave the warning on Wednesday.

He said the strike embarked upon by the workers was ill-conceived, unnecessary and politically motivated.

The health workers declared a work boycott under the umbrella of Joint Health Workers Union (JOHESU).

Udoh said that the demand for payment of 50 per cent of basic salaries as hazard allowance in the prevailing harsh economic climate by JOHESU was unreasonable

EFCC Jails Ex-NIMASA Executive Director, Captain Bala For 7 Years

Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba, a former Executive Director, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, has been jailed for five years.

Agaba was handed the jail term by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday.

Agaba was convicted for laundering about N1.5 billion while in office.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has cleared the air on the allegations of missing ₦40billion.

Nunieh on Monday raised a fresh allegation against Godswill Akapbio, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

Among other claims against the Minister, Nunieh alleged that Akpabio attempted to inflate the NDDC budget during her reign as Managing Director.
