Huge Fight Erupts In Taiwan Parliament As Members Come To Blows

Fighting erupted inside and outside of Taiwan’s parliament again on Friday over the disputed nomination by President Tsai Ing-wen of a senior aide to a top government watchdog post.

The main opposition party labelled the appointment cronyism.

The Kuomintang (KMT) has mounted a noisy campaign against the nomination of Chen Chu to head the Control Yuan, an independent government watchdog.

The KMT, soundly beaten by Tsai and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in elections in January, this week occupied parliament’s main chamber for three days, trying to thwart Chen from taking the post.

National Assembly Commission Queries Clerk For Insubordination

The National Assembly Service Commission has queried Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Omolori, Clerk of the National Assembly for ‘gross insubordination’.

This is in reaction to Sani-Omolori’s statement which asked his colleagues to disregard the announcement of his retirement and that of others as the commission does not have such powers.

Russian Hackers Accused Of Trying To Steal COVID-19 Vaccine Data

Britain, United States and Canada have accused hackers backed by the Russian state of trying to steal COVID-19 vaccine and treatment research from academic and pharmaceutical institutions around the world.

A co-ordinated statement from Britain, the United States and Canada, announced by Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) attributed the attacks to group APT29.

The hacker group, which is also known as Cozy Bear, is said to be operating as part of Russian intelligence services.

“We condemn these despicable attacks against those doing vital work to combat the coronavirus pandemic,” said NCSC Director of Operations Paul Chichester.

ECOWAS Court President Asante, Vice Ouattara Re-Elected

President of the Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS, Justice Edward Amoako Asante has been re-elected for a second term of two years.

The Vice President, Justice Gberi-be Ouattara, was also re-elected.

Asante, in his reaction, commended his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to use the second term to further improve on the functioning of the court and the delivery of its mandate.

Asante said the honor bestowed on him and his country, Ghana, shows that his colleagues “approve of the trajectory which we are collectively taking the Court towards”.

Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has warned doctors planning to relocate to countries like the United Kingdom, to reconsider such plans as they would lose out on getting hazard allowance.

Lottery Act Amendment: Reps Constitutes Technical Committee

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Governmental Affairs, Honourable Akin Alabi has constituted a technical committee to review the 2017 National Lottery Act.

Constituting the Committee in Abuja on Tuesday, he said the House Committee which oversees the gambling industry in Nigeria discovered the inadequacy of laws that could sustain the industry, saying there was need for amendment to the act to make the industry more robust.

Hon. Alabi said the industry is a sophisticated one that is technologically-driven, noting that the current law had become obsolete.
