U.S. Warns Citizens Of Heightened Detention Risks In China

BEIJING (Reuters) – The U.S. State Department warned American citizens on Saturday to “exercise increased caution” in China due to heightened risk of arbitrary law enforcement including detention and a ban from exiting the country.

“U.S. citizens may be detained without access to U.S. consular services or information about their alleged crime,” the State Department said in a security alert issued to its citizens in China, adding that U.S. citizens may face “prolonged interrogations and extended detention” for reasons related to state security.

KATHMANDU (Reuters) – Heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides that killed at least 40 people and displaced thousands in western Nepal, officials said on Saturday.

Twenty people were killed and at least 13 others were missing in Myagdi district, 200 km (125 miles) northwest of the capital Kathmandu, where several houses were destroyed on Friday, district administrator Gyan Nath Dhakal said.

“Rescuers are looking for those who are still missing in Myagdi,” Dhakal said, adding that 50 people had been plucked to safety using helicopters. “Eleven people who were injured in the landslides have been moved to nearby hospitals,” …

Five people have been killed and six hospitalized after gunmen took hostages at a church in South Africa on Saturday, police said.

70 Countries Are Running Out Of HIV Drugs

More than 70 countries warned they are at risk of running out of HIV medication due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a survey conducted by the World Health Organisation.

Twenty-four countries said they have a “critically low” stock of antiretroviral medicine, or ARVs, largely used as a therapy to treat HIV, or have seen a disruption in their supply chain as a result of the pandemic, the WHO said.

One Killed As 3-Storey Building Collapses In Lagos

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Saturday rescued six people alive, underneath the rubbles of a three-story building which collapsed on Freeman Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

American Navy has graduated its first African-American female strike fighter pilot. She is Madeline Swegle, a Virginia native from Burke.

She will receive her Wings of Gold on July 31, according to Naval Air Training Command.

Swegle first graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2017, according to Stars and Stripes.
