New York Cuts $1Bn From Police Budget Amid Calls For Reform

New York City reduced a billion dollars from the NYPD in its city budget for the next year.

Police reform advocates, cop supporters and President Trump expressed their discontent with slashing the NYPD’s budget.

For the 2021 fiscal year, the $1 billion reduction in the NYPD’s operating budget includes $484 million in cuts to the department; shifting the command of school officers to the Department of Education; eliminating two of the four NYPD training classes this year, which reduced headcount by 1,163 uniform officers; and reducing overtime spending by $352 million, according to the city council.

FIRS Generates ₦66bn From Stamp Duties In 5 Months

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has generated the sum of ₦66 billion from stamp duties between January and May.

Mr Abdullahi Ahmad, the FIRS Director, Communications and Liaison Department made this known in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Ahmad said the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Muhammad Nami, disclosed this at the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Audit and Recovery of Back Years Stamp Duties and the unveiling of the FIRS Adhesive Stamp in Abuja.

Nami said the money realised in the first five months of the year from stamp duties represented about 1,000 per cent increase.

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has said there was no plan yet to reopen tertiary institutions in the country.

Dr. Sani Aliyu, the National Coordinator of PTF, stated this when he appeared on Raypower FM on Tuesday.

A recent video shows Senegalese-American singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and actor Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam popularly known as Akon and his brother Omar being pulled over by Atlanta police officers to take pictures.

Buhari Seeks Senate Approval For 42 Ambassadorial Nominees

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has presented the list of 42 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for approval.

One of the nominees from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, was appointed as career ambassador, while the rest are non-career nominees.

Former minister, Ademola Seriki (Lagos) made the list, while former Managing Director, The Guardian, Debo Adesina (Oyo) is also on the list.

Dr Babagana Wakil, the chief of staff to Governor Babagana Zulum, has died.

According to a statement, Wakil died today after a brief illness.

The cause of death was not stated.

Saudi Arabia Increases VAT To 15 Percent From Today

A new Value Added Tax (VAT) regime of 15 percent comes into effect in Saudi Arabia from today.

The rate was 5 percent before today’s increase.

The Kingdom’s decision to triple VAT was announced on May 11, as part of a new set of measures to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy.

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Zakat and Tax (GAZT) explained that the new rate will be applicable to food and beverages, domestic transportation and commercial sale and rent of real estate.
