Defense Chief Esper Counters Trump On Using Armed Forces

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is on shaky ground with the White House after saying Wednesday that he does not support using active duty troops to quell the large-scale protests across the United States triggered by the death of George Floyd and those forces should only be used in a law enforcement role as a last resort.

Esper noted that “we are not in one of those situations now,” distancing himself from President Donald Trump’s recent threat to deploy the military to enforce order.

A GoFundMe fundraiser set up by the brother of the slain Minneapolis African-American, George Floyd, has raised more than seven times its $1.5 million goal.

The online fundraiser was meant to cover the cost of a memorial service for Floyd.

It raised more than $10.3 million as at Tuesday 23:00GMT, an irony because it was just a $20 bill that caused George Floyd’s death.

This was five days after it was set up by George’s brother, Philonise Floyd.

The fundraiser has collected donations from more than 403,000 donors.

Snapchat Curbs Trump Posts For Inciting ‘Racial Violence’

Snapchat on Wednesday stopped promoting posts by US President Donald Trump, saying they incite “racial violence.”

“We are not currently promoting the president’s content on Snapchat’s Discover platform,” Snapchat said in response to an AFP inquiry, referencing the youth-focused social network’s section for recommended content.

“We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover.”

The move came after Twitter took an unprecedented stand by hiding a Trump post it said promoted violence, thrusting rival Facebook into turmoil for refusing to sanction false or inflammatory posts by the US president.

British Parliament Resumes Physical Voting Amid COVID-19

Britain’s elected main house of parliament, the Commons, on Tuesday approved the government’s plan to end temporary electronic voting, introduced as a safety measure during the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives tabled a motion to resume in-person voting, requiring lawmakers to walk through lobbies and potentially flout social-distancing rules.

Following a fierce debate, lawmakers in the 650-seat house approved the motion by 261 to 163 in a traditional lobby vote that included some proxies.

The Conservatives hold a working majority of 87 in the Commons.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has defended himself for not condemning remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump appearing to threaten violent retribution against demonstrators protesting the death of a black man at the hands of police, according to media reported on Tuesday.

A Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Tuesday discharged former Kogi West Senator, Dino Daniel Melaye of criminal charges leveled against him by the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF.

The FCT High Court cleared Melaye of giving false information to police, as claimed by the AGF.

He was accused of deliberately accusing the ex-Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, now Deputy Governor, David Onoja of plotting to assassinate him in April 2017.

The House of Representatives has resolved to write a petition to the National Judiciary Council (NJC) against Justice Taiwo Taiwo of Abuja Federal High Court over a restraining order issued against the House over a $10 million bribery allegation.

Justice Taiwo on the 20th of May restrained the House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee investigating the allegation made by Mr. Ikenga Ugochinyere, Spokesperson, Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

Mr. Ikenga made allegations without providing evidence that the House of Representatives collected the bribe of $10million from Bill Gates to pass the Infectious Disease bill.
