China has hit back at the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, for claiming that the coronavirus originated in a lab in Wuhan.

Pompeo speaking on Sunday, insisted there was “enormous evidence” to show that the new coronavirus originated in a lab in China.

However, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying, warned Pompeo to leave the matter to scientists.

British leading epidemiologist Neil Ferguson resigned from Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) after media reported he broke social distancing rules.

Ferguson, who led the team at Imperial College London that advised the British government to take the national lockdown measures, told the Telegraph that he made an “error of judgement”.

An Italian medical firm, Takis said it has developed the world’s first vaccine that neutralises the coronavirus in human cells.

According to tests carried out at Rome’s infectious-disease Spallanzani Hospital, a single shot of the vaccine generates antibodies in mice.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that the antibodies can block the virus from infecting human cells.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said the number of reported COVID-19 cases in Africa increased from 46,500 to 49,000 in the past 24 hours.

The WHO Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, gave the update on its official twitter account @WHOAFRO on Wednesday.

“There are over 49,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent, with more than 16,000 associated recoveries and 1,900 deaths.
