Lockdown: Citizens Have Right To Sue Govt – Ramaphosa

As legal challenges to the South African government’s coronavirus lockdown mount, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday he could not stop anyone taking them to court.

“Since the start of this crisis, a number of people have exercised their right to approach the courts,” Ramaphosa wrote in his weekly letter to the nation, adding this was a normal tenet of a constitutional democracy.

Ramaphosa chose to address the issue as the country heads into its eighth week of lockdown and voices criticising the government’s measures grow louder.

Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Thomas Thabane has announced he will step down following months of pressure after he was named as a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife.

South Sudan VP Riek Machar, Wife Test Positive For COVID-19

South Sudan’s Vice President Riek Machar and his wife Angelina Teny, who serves as defence minister, have tested positive for the coronavirus, his office said on Monday.

It said that “a number of his office staff and bodyguards” had also tested positive for COVID-19.

Machar said on state television that he would be in self-isolation for 14 days in his residence.

So far, South Sudan has recorded 347 cases of coronavirus and six deaths.
