UK Coronavirus Death Toll Over 35,000

Coronavirus death toll in the UK today shot past the 35,000 mark, after 227 new deaths were reported.

The national total is now 35,023.

NHS England announced 174 deaths, Scotland recorded 29 and Wales 17.

Northern Ireland has the lowest, just seven deaths.

Figures show the daily deaths are consistently trending downwards – by comparison, there were 627 new fatalities last Tuesday and 693 the week before.

Coronavirus: Erdogan Announces First Nationwide Lockdown

Turkey is to impose its first nationwide lockdown before Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The four-day lockdown is to start on Saturday, on the eve of Eid festivities, across all 81 provinces, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.

Turkey has not had a stringent countrywide curfew since it reported its first positive case on March 11, resorting instead to weekend curfews in certain provinces.

Erdogan said that some mosques would also gradually reopen for afternoon worship after Friday prayers on May 29.

Yobe State Chief Judge Nabaruma Is Dead

Justice Musa Nabaruma, the chief judge of the northeastern state of Yobe is dead.

He died on Monday night at the National Hospital, Abuja after a protracted illness.

He will be buried today.

Nabaruma was born in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.

He was appointed nine years ago as the Chief Judge and was the longest serving judge, though not an indigene.

The state was yet to make an official statement on the death.

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Kano State says the training of women on face mask production is part of the agency’s continuous efforts to tackle unemployment.

The Kano State Coordinator of NDE, Alhaji Iliyasu Ahmed, made this known on Monday at a training organised for the beneficiaries at the NDE Skills Centre in Kano.
