Cyclone Toll Hits 88 As Bangladesh And India Mop Up

India and Bangladesh began a massive clean-up Thursday after the fiercest cyclone since 1999 killed at least 88 people, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Cyclone Amphan flattened houses, uprooted trees, blew off roofs and toppled electricity pylons, while a storm surge inundated coastal villages and wrecked shrimp farms vital to the local economy.

The United Nations office in Bangladesh estimates 10 million people were affected, and some 500,000 people may have lost their homes.

NFL teams stand to lose a combined $5.5 billion (5 billion euros) in stadium revenue if the 2020 campaign is played without any spectators, according to a Forbes magazine estimate.

The magazine, which annually values each NFL club, said the amount teams would lose with no spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic equals 38 percent of total NFL revenue from the 2018 season, the latest from which figures are available.

That includes lost revenue from ticket sales, parking, sponsors, food and drinks and souvenir sales.

Belgium Coach Martinez Extends Contract Until 2022

Roberto Martinez has extended his contract as Belgium coach until 2022 to take him up to the World Cup in Qatar, the Belgian football federation announced Wednesday.

The 46-year-old former Everton manager took over as head coach of the Belgian national side in 2016, leading them to third in the 2018 World Cup.

The Spaniard’s initial contract ran until Euro 2020, which has been postponed a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Death Toll Rises From Yobe Attacks, Pope Condems Violence

According to the Associated Press, the Nigerian Red Cross confirmed on Sunday that the death toll in the recent northeast Nigerian attacks launched by Boko Haram has risen to over 100, and is expected to get higher.

Local clinics and hospitals are still counting the casualties from the attacks Friday in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, Ibrahim Bulama told The Associated Press.

The Confederation of African Football on Wednesday shunned Nigerian players on the shortlist for the 2011 African Player of the Year award.

The continent football governing body  included three Ghanaians in the 10-man list, Supersport reports.

The Ghanaians are Andre Ayew, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan. The list was announced at a short ceremony in Accra on Wednesday morning.

The World Bank has stated that global prices of food remained high, even though its Food Price Index maintained the same rates between July and September 2011.

The World Bank, in its recently released Global Food Price Index (GFPI) indicated that despite dipping marginally in September 2011 by one percent and settling at five percent below its February 2011 peak, the food price index is still 19 percent above its September 2010 levels.
