As Amazon becomes an increasingly important lifeline in the pandemic crisis, it is being hit with a wave of criticism from activists, politicians and others who question the tech giant’s growing influence.

Amazon has become the most scrutinized company during the health emergency.

It has boosted its global workforce to nearly one million and dealt with protests over warehouse safety and reported deaths of several employees.

But Amazon has also pledged to spend at least $4 billion in the current quarter — its entire expected operating profit — on coronavirus mitigation efforts, including relief contributions and funding research.

US: COVID-19 Death Toll Doubles In 4 Weeks, Hits 90,000

Just short of one month after the coronavirus death toll in United States topped 40,000, the figure has more than doubled.

On April 19, John Hopkins University and Worldometers, put their individual tallies at 40,000.

The fatalities were countrywide, with almost half of them in New York.

As of 0955 hours Nigerian time on May 17, Worldometers put the toll at 90,113.

The Trump administration has been under fire over its handling of the pandemic.

Expectedly, Democratic stalwarts are using the issue to demarket President Donald Trump ahead of the November elections.

Four-time Emmy award-winning comedian Fred Willard, who appeared in films including “Anchorman” and “This is Spinal Tap” and television shows such as “Modern Family,” has died aged 86, his agent announced Saturday.

Tributes poured in for the actor, with long-time friend and fellow showbiz veteran Jamie Lee Curtis tweeting “Thanks for the deep belly laughs Mr. Willard.”

Eleven firefighters were injured, three of them critically, in downtown Los Angeles when a fire in a commercial smoke shop sparked a major explosion and spread to nearby structures on Saturday evening, officials said.

Major League Baseball players will be prohibited from taking showers after games and there will be no fist-bump celebrations or spitting sunflower seeds in the dugout, according to a return-to-play guidelines drafted by league officials.

China’s ambassador to Israel, Du Wei has been found dead.

The Ambassador was found dead on Sunday in his apartment, in a Tel Aviv suburb.

According to Reuters, the cause of his death is still unknown.

An Israeli police spokesman, confirming the news told Reuters news agency: “As part of the regular procedure, police units are at the scene.”

Israel’s Channel 12 TV, quoting unnamed medical sources, also reported that Mr Du died in his sleep of natural causes.

Brazil’s most populous State, Sao Paulo, has surpassed China when it comes to the number of deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

According to data released by Brazil’s Health Ministry on Saturday, there have been 4,688 COVID-19-related deaths in Sao Paulo, which is home to more than 40million people.

Official figures from China, which has a population of more than a billion, show the country has had 4,637 COVID-19 deaths.
