EU Spearheads $8 Billion Virus Fundraiser

Celebrities, world leaders and philanthropists pledged some 7.4 billion euros ($8.1 billion) on Monday for research into coronavirus vaccines, treatments and testing during an EU-led videoconference that was snubbed by the United States.

Taika Waititi To Direct New ‘Star Wars’ Film

New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi will write and direct a new “Star Wars” film, Disney announced Monday.

Waititi has shot from indie acclaim to mainstream Hollywood success in recent years, overseeing Marvel superhero smash hit “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017 before winning a screenplay Oscar for Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” in February.

He also directed the first season finale of “The Mandalorian,” the hit television show set in the blockbuster sci-fi franchise universe.

No date was set for the new movie. But the first of three currently scheduled “Star Wars” on Disney’s release calendar is penciled in for December 2022.

Over 82 Million Nigerians Are Poor – NBS Reports

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said that more than 82.9 million Nigerians are poor by national standards.

NBS made this known in its report on Poverty and Inequality in Nigeria 2019, released on Monday.

It explained that the figure showed that 40.1 percent of total population were classified as poor, adding that in other words, an average four out of 10 individuals in Nigeria had real per capita expenditures below ₦137,430.00 per year.

This means monthly income of an individual in this category is less than ₦11,500 while income per day is ₦38.00
