Nigeria To Set Up $1.39bn Fund To Fight Coronavirus

Nigeria plans to create a 500 billion naira ($1.39bn) coronavirus fund to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure to tackle the virus, the government said.

Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed, House of Representatives speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and Senate President Ahmad Lawan agreed in a meeting that the crisis intervention fund would pull in cash as loans from various special government accounts and get the rest from grants and loans from multilateral institutions, a statement said.

Coronavirus Deaths In New York Go Past 3,500

New York state’s coronavirus toll has risen at a devastating pace to 3,565 deaths, up from 2,935 the previous day, the largest 24-hour jump recorded there.

Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that Madrid will extend the country’s coronavirus lockdown until April 25, as Spain’s death toll reached 11,744.

Indonesia Gets S’East Asia’s Highest Coronavirus Deaths

Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia reported its first two coronavirus cases on March 2, and has tallied 1,986 confirmed cases and 181 deaths as of April 3, making it the country with the most coronavirus deaths and the highest fatality rate in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia’s death rate stood at 9.1 percent compared to 5.2 worldwide as of Friday. In comparison, the Philippines had a 4.5 percent death rate and Malaysia had a 1.6 percent rate during the same period, although both countries have higher number of cases with more than 3,000 each.

Nigeria’s Coronavirus Cases Jump To 210

Nigeria’s Coronavirus has reached the total number of 210 after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 20 new confirmed cases.

This coming after NCDC first recorded six cases in Osun Sate.

In its Twitter update at 10.30 pm Friday night, NCDC confirmed 20 new cases. Eleven cases were confirmed in Lagos, three cases in the FCT, three in Edo, two in Osun and one in Ondo.

Two new deaths have been recorded in Lagos and Edo State, with twenty-five cases discharged.

Trump Agrees With WHO On Face Mask Wearing

President Donald Trump on Friday recommended that Americans cover their faces with masks when outdoors to avoid contracting coronavirus.

The advice came on Friday with over 275,000 Americans infected by the virus and 7,067 killed over.

However, Trump said he would not wear the mask himself.

The decision was a policy U-turn for the country’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It also breached World Health Organisation guideline about the precautionary measures people can take to avoid contracting the deadly virus.

Cameroonian football legend, Samuel Eto’o have joined other Africans in calling out two French Doctors who asked for the new Coronavirus drug to be tested in Africa.

During the debate on TV channel LCI, Jean Paul Mira and Camille Locht insisted that Africa is the best place to conduct such test as they recalled how an experimental treatment for AIDS was carried out in Africa.

Nigerian Army said it has arrested soldiers in a trending video clips openly threatening to rape Warri women and girls and infect them with HIV.

Virus Kills 2 More Nigerians, Lagos Hits Over 100 Cases

The deadly Coronavirus disease has killed two more Nigerians, with Lagos cases surpassing 100 mark to set a record in the country.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, reports late Friday night that the two new deaths were recorded in Lagos and Edo States, bringing the total figure of those who have so far died of the disease in Nigeria to four.

The NCDC also recorded 11 new cases of Coronavirus in Lagos, taking its toll to 109, while Edo, which previously had four cases now have seven cases with three new addition.
