UAE Doubles Stimulus To Counter Coronavirus Impact

The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates said Sunday it has doubled to $70 billion a stimulus package to support the Gulf state’s economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“The aggregate value of all capital and liquidity measures adopted by the CBUAE since 14 March 2020 has reached 256 billion dirhams ($70 billion),” the central bank said in a statement.

Last month, oil-rich UAE announced stimulus worth $35 billion that included aid to the banking system, facilities for loans and injecting funds into the bourses.

The Lagos State Police Command have arrested Nollywood star, Funke Akindele, for hosting a house party despite an order against gatherings in the city.

An Information and Communication Technology expert, Mr. Jide Awe, on Sunday described rumours linking coronavirus to the roll-out of 5G technology as baseless conspiracy theory and misinformation.

According to Awe, the belief in such conspiracy theory derived from a deadly mix of ignorance, unsubstantiated evidence, and zeal.

The Sawiris family in Egypt has donated $6.3 million to back the country’s efforts in combating the spread of COVID-19.

Sawiris Foundation for Social Development gave $2.1million to support distressed families.

The UK coronavirus death toll is now close to 5,000 after another 621 people died in the last 24 hours.

The new figure, which is lower than the record 708 deaths reported on Saturday, takes the country’s fatalities to 4,934.

Confirmed cases released by the Department of Health also jumped by 5,903.

The national total rose to 47,806 out of close to 200,000 tested for the virus.

Britain is now the fifth among countries with high death figures.
