Debt Moratorium Essential To Help Africa Fight Virus

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday called for a moratorium on the debt of African countries as “an essential step” to help the continent get through the coronavirus crisis.

Speaking in an interview with Radio France Internationale, Macron urged G20 finance ministers meeting Wednesday to take action on a moratorium as the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to overwhelm the fragile health systems of the poorest countries.

The moratorium would be a first step towards full cancellation of African debt, he said.

Danish Schools Begin Reopening After Month-Long Closure

Denmark began reopening schools for younger children on Wednesday after a month-long closure to combat the novel coronavirus, becoming the first country in Europe to do so.

Nurseries, kindergartens and primary schools were restarting after they were officially closed on March 17 in an effort to curb the COVID-19 epidemic, though many had shut before then.

The United Kingdom’s Mission in Nigeria has announced plans to begin evacuating another set of British nationals from Saturday, amid COVID-19 crisis.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, over 2,000 foreign nationals from the US, Canada, Germany, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, South Africa, and France have been evacuated from Nigeria.

In a statement by the British High Commission on its verified Twitter page, the mission said that the Britons would be evacuated from Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Covid-19: Nigeria Records Highest Case As Toll Hits 373

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, on Tuesday night confirmed it recorded additional 11 new cases of coronavirus in Lagos State.

The development is coming after the agency earlier confirmed 19 cases on Tuesday.

As at 9:20pm, Nigeria confirmed 14 cases in Lagos, 1 in Kano, 2 in FCT, 1 in Akwa-Ibom and 1 in Edo State.

However, on Tuesday evening, the agency on its Twitter handle confirmed 11 new cases in Lagos State.

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of aviation has reacted to reports that the Nigerian Army, on Thursday killed some civilians in an airstrike in Borno village.

Reports emerged on Thursday that 13 civilians, including children were mistakenly killed in the airstrike carried out by the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno village.

Reacting, Fani-Kayode called on the International Criminial Court, ICC, to investigate the Nigerian Army and bring those responsible for allegedly killing innocent civilians to justice.

The former minister described the killings as unacceptable.

The Federal Government says plans were being made for students in tertiary institutions to receive lectures via the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

India To Ease Lockdown In Rural Areas

India will permit several activities in rural areas starting next week, including manufacturing and infrastructure building, to provide relief to workers impacted by the coronavirus lockdown, the government said on Wednesday.

The Home Ministry guidelines came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a nationwide lockdown to May 3.

The easing of the lockdown would start next Monday and take place only in those rural areas where there were no COVID-19 containment zones or hotspots, a Home Ministry release said.
